BARISAN Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied suggestions of any discord between the coalition’s central and state-level leadership ahead of the upcoming Sabah election (PRN).
Responding to reports of internal disagreements, Zahid clarified that any perceived inconsistencies in recent public statements may have stemmed from remarks being taken out of context.
“There is no rift because we hold consultations and discussions regularly,” he told reporters on Thursday after officiating the KEMAS Educators’ Day celebration in Bangi today.
Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO President, was addressing speculation of disunity between BN leaders at the national and state levels regarding the upcoming state polls.
In the previous Sabah state election in 2020, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) – which included Perikatan Nasional (PN) – secured 17 seats, while BN won 14 and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) took seven. GRS subsequently formed the state government after collectively winning 38 seats.
Although BN and PN have yet to formally finalise their cooperation framework for the next Sabah election, both coalitions are expected to do so in the near future.
Asked about potential mediation by Pakatan Harapan (PH) to bridge any gaps between BN and GRS, Zahid said such efforts were unnecessary.
“We are already in alignment with PN. We are open to cooperation with other parties and coalitions, and discussions are underway.
“I don’t believe there is any need for a bridge or intermediary. God willing, we will engage in wider negotiations beyond GRS,” he added. - June 19, 2025
