A 28-YEAR-old female teacher has been remanded for three days after allegedly caning two five-year-old girls during a netball training session at a childcare centre in Kuala Muda near Sungai Petani last Thursday.
The remand application was made at the Sungai Petani Court Complex and approved earlier this morning, with the detention effective until 24 June.
Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, confirmed the remand and said the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon or dangerous means.
The teacher was arrested at 10am yesterday following a police report lodged by the children's families, who discovered bruises and cane marks on the girls' hands and legs.
“The incident allegedly occurred during netball training at the childcare centre when the two girls were accused of not participating earnestly,” said police.
The parents reportedly noticed the injuries after the girls complained of pain. They were taken to a local clinic for treatment and later referred to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) for further examination.
A video of the teacher tearfully apologising to one of the victim's families has since gone viral on social media.
It is understood the training session was held in preparation for a district-level netball tournament scheduled for next week. - June 22, 2025
