POLICE have launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old detainee facing rape charges who escaped from custody at the Sibu Central Police Station yesterday afternoon.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, said the suspect managed to flee at approximately 4pm while still clad in purple lock-up attire and in handcuffs.

“An immediate manhunt operation has been launched, involving all elements of the police force to track and re-apprehend the escaped detainee,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code, which carry penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
