A SMALLHOLDER farmer from Bentong, Pahang has reportedly lost RM239,804 after becoming entangled in an online investment scam that promised high returns.
According to Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, the 37-year-old victim was introduced to the so-called investment opportunity by an individual through the messaging platform WhatsApp.
“The suspect promised the victim handsome profits if he invested in the scheme,” he said on Wednesday.
The victim was provided with a website link, which served as the investment platform. He subsequently made 41 transactions to 19 different bank accounts between 22 March and 16 June.
Police confirmed that the victim financed his investments using his own savings and a loan borrowed from his brother.
“He only realised he had been deceived when none of the promised returns materialised,” Datuk Seri Yahaya added.
The victim lodged a police report at the Bentong District Police Headquarters on Tuesday. The case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Datuk Seri Yahaya has urged the public to exercise caution when approached with investment opportunities that appear too good to be true.
“Do not be easily swayed by investment schemes that promise lucrative profits,” he warned. - June 25, 2025
