A VIETNAMESE man and woman are facing the death penalty after being charged at the Magistrate’s Court here approximately two weeks ago with drug trafficking and possession offences.
The accused, 45-year-old Lee Yuen Fei and 22-year-old Trieu Thi Mai, merely nodded in acknowledgement as the charges were read out through a court interpreter before Magistrate Nabilah Nizam.
No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge sheet, both defendants are accused of jointly trafficking over 38 kilograms of the dangerous drug methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA).
The alleged offence took place at 8:20 pm on 14 June at Jalan Seri Orkid 25, Taman Seri Orkid.
They face charges under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and may be punished under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
“If convicted, they may be sentenced to death or life imprisonment and not less than 15 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed,” the prosecution outlined.
In addition, the pair are charged with possession of 1.8 kilograms of ketamine at the same location and time.
This charge is under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of a fine up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, if found guilty, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Aishah Latif, while both accused were unrepresented.
The court has fixed 26 August for a case mention to await the status of chemical reports. - June 26, 2025
