Umno President defers decision on Hishammuddin’s membership suspension to party leadership
Supreme Council (MT) may deliberate on the motion even if the individual concerned has not submitted any appeal letter or apology - June 26, 2025

UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has handed over the decision regarding the motion to revoke the suspension of former Deputy President Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein’s party membership to UMNO’s Political Bureau and Supreme Council.

Dr Ahmad Zahid stated that the Supreme Council (MT) may deliberate on the motion even if the individual concerned has not submitted any appeal letter or apology.

“Lazimnya, semua usul yang dikemukakan oleh bahagian-bahagian akan dibawa ke jawatankuasa usul untuk diteliti dan disemak. Bagi kes usul daripada UMNO Bahagian Sembrong, terdapat kenyataan daripada Menteri Besar Johor (Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi) yang akan membawa perkara ini ke Majlis Tertinggi, maka kita akan tunggu,” he explained.

“This is because the power to dismiss, suspend, or reinstate a member, if there is no General Assembly, rests with the UMNO Supreme Council as the highest authority,” he added.

He made these remarks when asked to comment on a motion brought forward by UMNO Sembrong division seeking the immediate withdrawal of Hishammuddin’s suspension without any conditions.

Ahmad Zahid also emphasised that any suspension of membership is carried out reasonably, and the Supreme Council will not impose such measures without a solid basis.Hishammuddin’s membership was suspended for six years by the UMNO Supreme Council on 27 January 2023 for breaching Clause 20.9 of the UMNO Constitution. - June 26, 2025
