SURVIVORS of the fatal bus crash involving students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) are preparing to take legal action against the driver and bus company involved in the 9 June incident on Jalan Jeli-Gerik, Perak.
Abdul Wafiy Kamarudin, 23, one of the injured students, said the move aims to obtain rightful compensation and justice for the victims, as well as to serve as a reminder for responsible driving on public roads.
“The claim will cover damages for injuries and loss of personal belongings during the accident,” Harian Metro quoted him saying. “It will be submitted once documentation with the relevant agencies is completed.”
He added that the group is in the process of gathering other victims willing to join the legal claim.
“So far, most of my peers have agreed to proceed with legal action alongside the appointed lawyers,” he said, following discussions with legal counsel Dr Mahmud Jumaat.
Dr Mahmud confirmed that he and his team have been entrusted by the families of several victims, including those with severe injuries such as Nor Erika Elysha Mohd Zaidi, 21, to initiate legal proceedings under applicable laws.
“Most concerning is the emergence of third-party brokers who impersonate lawyers, promising the victims unrealistic outcomes in exchange for commissions from the law firms they promote,” he said.
“What matters most is that these families receive proper representation and justice after such a heartbreaking tragedy.”
