THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from an individual believed to have shared racially charged content on social media in connection with the recent promotion of a senior officer in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
In a statement, MCMC confirmed that a mobile phone and a SIM card were seized as part of the investigation.
“The content is believed to be related to the recent appointment of a new Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), featuring a racial narrative that could potentially provoke unrest and threaten national unity and harmony.
“Following this incident, the individual was called in to give his statement and assist in the investigation,” the statement read.
The investigation is being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC also issued a stern reminder to the public not to engage in the uploading, sharing or dissemination of content touching on religious, racial, or royal institution sensitivities — commonly referred to as the ‘3Rs’.
“MCMC would like to remind the public not to upload, share, or spread any content that touches on religious, racial or royal institution sensitivities (3Rs), especially those that can divide society and disrupt national harmony.
“MCMC remains committed to ensuring the country’s cyberspace remains safe, secure and respected, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity and harmony among Malaysia’s multiracial society,” the commission added.
Earlier reports confirmed that Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng had made history by becoming the first senior Chinese officer to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in the MAF. - July 1, 2025
