A 52-YEAR-OLD woman has lost RM84,000 after falling victim to a cryptocurrency investment scam promoted through TikTok, according to local police.
Tangkak District Police Chief, Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib, said the victim lodged a report yesterday, claiming she had been deceived by a non-existent investment scheme.
“The victim was drawn into the investment after becoming acquainted with a suspect via the TikTok app in February,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
“The suspect promised high returns in a short period, which led the victim to invest by transferring money into accounts specified by the suspect between 29 May and this past Monday.”
Roslan said the victim ended up losing RM84,000 through 17 separate transactions into five different accounts, which are believed to be ‘mule accounts’.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
“The public is advised to conduct background checks before engaging in any investment schemes to avoid falling victim to scams,” he added.
“If someone has already become a victim, please contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) via the 997 hotline as an immediate measure to block further fund transfers from suspect accounts,” he said. - July 11, 2025
