A TOTAL of 25 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) gathered peacefully near the family residence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Cherok Tok Kun, Penang, on Saturday, in a show of solidarity with his leadership.
The hour-long assembly also saw participation from several political figures, including Pantai Jerejak state assemblyman Fahmi Zainol and Machang Bubok assemblyman Lee Khai Loon.
Chairman of Sekretariat Bara Juang, Khairul Ishak, who led the gathering, said the event was not politically driven, but rather an initiative by civil society to defend the Prime Minister from perceived harassment.
“Today we gather as citizens to stand by the Prime Minister and to reject attempts by any party to disturb his family’s residence,” he told reporters after the rally.
Participants were seen holding banners reading ‘Hidup Anwar’, ‘Hidup PMX’ and ‘Tolak Walaun’, and chanted slogans in support of the Tambun MP.
Throughout the event, over 50 police officers and personnel were stationed at the site to ensure public order and prevent any untoward incidents.
Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the assembly proceeded peacefully, adding that organisers had complied with guidelines and police recommendations.
He noted that while a permit is no longer required under current legislation, organisers are encouraged to submit a notice at least five days in advance to the relevant District Police Chief.
“The purpose of this notice is to allow police to make necessary preparations to ensure the smooth running of the event, as well as public and traffic safety during the gathering.
“It also facilitates discussion between organisers and the authorities to avoid any disruptions. Therefore, the public and organisers are reminded to understand their rights and responsibilities under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (APA 2012),” he said. - July 12, 2025
