PARTICIPANTS in Monday’s “March to Uphold Judicial Independence” in Putrajaya adhered fully to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, Kuala Lumpur’s Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan confirmed in a statement.
The Malaysian Bar Council organised the assembly and march from the Palace of Justice to the Prime Minister’s Office, held from 12:30pm to 4:00pm.
“Participants in the gathering and march complied with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” said Mohamed Usuf.
“The assembly was held to urge the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry into allegations of interference in judicial appointments and decisions, and to call for the immediate filling of judicial vacancies,” he added.
Approximately 600 Bar Council members took part in the demonstration, which proceeded peacefully.
“There were no untoward incidents, and police monitored the gathering throughout to ensure safety and order,” said Mohamed Usuf.
According to media reports, the march aimed to submit a memorandum containing four demands to the Prime Minister’s Office. Participants wore black in solidarity and carried placards calling for transparency in judicial appointments and swift government action to address concerns over public trust in the judiciary. - July 15, 2025
