POLICE have recovered several pieces of evidence in connection with a burglary at a residence in Bukit Ledang, believed to be occupied by a grandchild of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The incident resulted in an estimated loss of RM1.8 million, mostly involving family heirloom jewellery.
Kuala Lumpur’s Acting Police Chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed that statements had been recorded from three individuals, including Dr Mahathir’s grandchild.
“At the time of the incident, only a domestic helper and a security guard were residing at the house,” he said at a press conference held at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters on Monday.
He explained that the house, described as an old property rarely occupied, showed signs of forced entry.
“Police inspection found evidence of a break-in at the rear of the house. There were clear cutting marks,” he said.
While the residence was equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV), Mohamed Usuf said the system offered little assistance to the investigation.
“There is a CCTV system at the property, but it is believed to have been installed in the late 1990s and only stores less than 24 hours of footage. Unfortunately, it is of no help in this case.
“However, we are examining CCTV footage from nearby premises as the incident may have occurred more than 24 hours before the report was lodged,” he added.
He also confirmed that forensic teams are analysing evidence collected from the scene.
“Fingerprints and other relevant material are being examined by our forensic team,” he said.
No arrests have been made so far.
It is understood that the incident took place last Wednesday and was discovered by the domestic helper around 3pm. She reportedly contacted the victim’s grandchild after noticing that the rear gate had been cut open and the bedroom had been ransacked. - July 28, 2025
