THE financial performance of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) following a recent electricity tariff hike, along with updates on the country’s 5G infrastructure rollout, were among key matters raised during Dewan Rakyat proceedings on Wednesday.
According to the official Parliament Order Paper, Lim Guan Eng (PH–Bagan) queried the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation on the extent of TNB’s annual profit, specifically how much additional revenue was generated after the 1 July increase in commercial electricity tariffs.
Lim also questioned whether the 14.2 per cent tariff hike could be postponed or implemented in phases, citing reports that TNB’s profits had surged by over 70 per cent the previous year.
Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN–Tanjong Karang) sought an update from the Minister of Communications on the government’s 5G expansion strategy, particularly efforts to extend coverage to rural and underserved areas.
Also during the oral question session, RSN Rayer (PH–Jelutong) pressed the Minister of Transport on preventive measures following recent fatal road accidents in Teluk Intan and Gerik, which claimed the lives of Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel and a student from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
Muhammad Islahuddin Abas (PN–Mersing) raised a separate concern to the Minister of Higher Education, asking for justification behind the decision to relocate the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) teaching hospital from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan to Kota Tinggi, Johor.
Following the Q\&A session, the sitting proceeded with continued debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on 31 July. The plan, themed "Redesigning Development", outlines a projected investment of RM611 billion for the period between 2026 and 2030.
To date, 78 Members of Parliament have participated in the debate. The current Dewan Rakyat sitting will run for 24 days until 28 August. - August 13, 2025
