THE government will form a dedicated special committee to tackle bullying, with representatives from various ministries, departments and government agencies, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi said the decision to establish the committee was reached during the Cabinet meeting earlier today.
“This committee will coordinate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for handling bullying across all ministries, departments, and agencies,” he said during the Ministry of Communications’ weekly press briefing.
The initiative comes alongside proposed amendments to several key laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act, the Penal Code, and the Special Tribunal under the forthcoming Anti-Bullying Act.
The committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on 2 September, and will be chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Fahmi added that the committee would examine various issues, including SOPs for dormitories and the proposal to establish the Anti-Bullying Tribunal.
When asked by the press whether the government would consider adopting Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (MARA) approach of appointing military veterans as dormitory wardens in schools, Fahmi said the matter would be left to the committee for evaluation.
“We’ll leave it to the committee to review, but I see no issue with what MARA is doing. Hopefully, it will yield positive outcomes,” he said. - August 29, 2025
