THERE were no bruises or signs of abuse on the body of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir when she arrived at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE) in Kota Kinabalu.

Witness Dr Janefer Voo, 32, a medical officer at the hospital's Emergency and Trauma Department, said on July 16, at 4.38 am, she received Zara who was unconscious.

Among the injuries suffered by the victim were swelling and bleeding at the back of the head, a closed fracture on the left wrist, an open fracture on the left ankle and a closed fracture on the right ankle.

After examination, "Trauma Alert" was activated at the HQE Emergency Department at 4.42 am, July 16, for immediate referral to the Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Surgery and Anaesthesiology teams.

"Based on my assessment, the patient is suspected of suffering from a serious traumatic brain injury, injuries to the back of the head, fractures to both ankles and the left wrist, in addition to suspected internal bleeding.

"Due to the patient's extremely low blood pressure, she was suspected of suffering from internal injuries due to 'high impact' trauma to the body which caused internal bleeding.

"There were no bruises or signs of abuse on the patient's body," she said when reading out the witness statement before the Coroner's Court as reported by Berita Harian.

Coordinating officer, Datuk Badiuszaman Ahmad, then asked Dr Voo to sign her witness statement.

Dr Voo said that after the resuscitation and imaging process was carried out, the patient was found to have bleeding in the brain, open fractures to the left ankle and left heel, closed fractures to the left arm and right leg, fractures to the lumbar vertebrae 2, 3 and 4, as well as blood clots in the pelvic bone and left psoas muscle.

Dr Voo is a trainee medical officer from the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Hospital (UMS) who is stationed at HQE. - September 9, 2025
