KUALA LUMPUR – The government has been urged to reveal the names of the companies involved in the “meat cartel” case.
Umno youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, in a Facebook post, said this is important to restore the trust and confidence of Muslims over the legitimacy of the halal status of imported meat in the market.
“There shouldn’t be any effort to cover up or protect any parties, even if VIPs and VVIPs are found to be involved.”
The youth wing also called for the setting up of a special task force – involving halal supervisory and enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police.
He said the task force should investigate and take stern action against any party or parties involved in graft related to the case.
Earlier this month, it was reported that a “meat cartel” had been operating for more than 40 years, smuggling frozen products from abroad and repackaging it with fake halal labels.
It was also said that the tainted beef contained kangaroo and horse meat, and possibly from diseased animals.
Senior officers from four government agencies were said to have abetted the syndicate after being bribed with money and sex. – The Vibes, December 27, 2020
