THE body of a 25-year-old man who was reported missing after allegedly falling from the Penang Bridge on Sunday has been recovered, eight kilometres from the presumed site of the incident near a jetty at Pangkalan Weld.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department Deputy Director of Operations John Sagun Francis said the victim was found at 9.35am this morning and subsequently transported to the Marine Department jetty in Batu Uban before the case was handed over to the police for further action.
“The victim, aged 25, was brought to the jetty and the case has been handed to the police for further action,” John said. He added that the search and rescue operation, which involved the Civil Defence Force, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and volunteer firefighters, concluded at 11.45am.
The deceased has been sent to the Forensic Department at Penang Hospital for an autopsy.
The victim’s 19-year-old wife, Nurul Natasha Amyra Ishak, confirmed receiving news of her husband Elmi Nur Zamani Aizat Abdul Azim’s body at 9.50am. “My husband’s body has been sent to Penang Hospital for autopsy,” she said.
Speaking to reporters, the victim’s brother-in-law, Fitri, 25, described Elmi as cheerful and helpful, noting that he worked as an assistant at a night market.
“We were happy to live with him, and he often helped others. There is a lot of inaccurate information circulating on social media; I cannot stop it, but I hope it ends soon,” he said.
Elmi is survived by his wife and their children, including a second child born just seven months ago. Nurul Natasha previously shared on social media her grief and hope that her husband’s body would be found.
According to earlier reports, Elmi was last seen at kilometre 2.8 of the Penang Bridge, travelling from the island towards Perai.
He reportedly left behind a plastic bag containing clothes and his mobile phone, while his Yamaha Y16 motorcycle was found abandoned by the roadside.
The funeral is expected to be held at Penaga cemetery. - November 18, 2025
