YOUNG voters in Kukusan, located near Tawau are increasingly turning their support to independent candidates, perceiving them as offering greater freedom, neutrality, and a break from party politics, according to incumbent ADUN and independent candidate Datuk Rina Haji Jainal.
Speaking during a public dialogue with residents at Taman Univilla, Rina attributed this shift to changing attitudes among the youth, who over the past few years have grown disillusioned with mainstream political parties and their agendas.
“Platform Bebas provides that opportunity because the youth feel their choices are not constrained, and it is closer to a genuine struggle that listens to the people without hidden agendas,” she said.
Rina observed that young voters are drawn to independent candidates who demonstrate a consistent track record and remain unbound by party loyalty, enabling them to engage in politics with greater maturity.
“The positive reception from youth is truly heartening, especially when they recognise that the programmes and initiatives implemented over time genuinely align with their needs,” she said.
“From educational support and entrepreneurship programmes to active participation in sports and community projects, everything is continuous and not just a seasonal effort.”
She added that strong connections have formed between herself and the younger generation, who see her as approachable, responsive, and genuinely invested in their concerns. “It is not just political perception but a bond between a representative and the community I have served since my mandate began,” she explained.
Rina also highlighted increasing engagement among women, particularly single mothers and young women, who feel empowered to voice their opinions freely in her presence. “As a woman in politics, I understand their burdens and needs, which makes it easier for them to express their views openly,” she noted.
Housing remains a priority for Rina, particularly for young couples and new parents, many of whom continue to struggle to access affordable housing or public rental schemes.
“I have raised these issues several times in the State Legislative Assembly and will continue to advocate until concrete action is taken. I want the basic needs of the youth addressed, their interests understood, and their aspirations valued,” she said.
She concluded by emphasising that her commitment to youth development in Kukusan will persist and expand, aiming to nurture a generation that is competitive, open-minded, and ready to serve as the backbone of Sabah’s future. - November 18, 2025
