THE Malaysian Public Transport Users Association (4PAM) has called for urgent improvements to safety standards and passenger protection following the monorail breakdown that left hundreds stranded in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
4PAM president, Ajit Johl, said the incident underscored the continuing need to strengthen safety protocols, emergency preparedness and the clarity of communication provided to passengers.
“Every incident, whether minor or major, must be treated as an opportunity to reinforce the resilience of the country’s public transport system,” he said, stressing that all disruptions should serve as lessons to strengthen Malaysia’s public transport network.
He urged an immediate technical review to determine the root cause of the malfunction and to ensure that the findings are made public.
“We urge an immediate technical review to identify the cause of the disruption and to inform the public of the investigation’s outcome,” he said in a statement.
At the same time, 4PAM pressed for more frequent and structured emergency evacuation drills, better information delivery to passengers and the provision of alternative transport and compensation whenever such incidents occur.
“Public transport safety is a shared responsibility. We are committed to working constructively with the relevant parties and agencies to strengthen the country’s public transport ecosystem,” Ajit added.
