KUALA LUMPUR – No pork, horse or kangaroo meat was found during a raid at a warehouse in Senai, Johor, earlier this month, said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Its deputy minister, Datuk Rosol Wahid, told the Dewan Negara today that sample testing was carried out by the Chemistry Department.

“We were initially told that there was kangaroo and horse meat from the items we seized.

“We did not pick and choose (the samples), but sent them all to the Chemistry Department. The department reported that there was no pork, horse or kangaroo meat in the seized items.”

He added that the ministry supports the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to look into the “meat cartel” issue.

Earlier this month, it was reported that a syndicate had been operating for more than 40 years, passing off meat products as halal ones.

Among the allegations were that the meat was sourced from diseased animals and contained horse and kangaroo parts.

Senior officials from four government agencies have since been accused of abetment and corruption in the scandal. – The Vibes, December 29, 2020
