FORMER Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been appointed Chairman of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) for a two-year term, effective immediately, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed today.

The announcement follows Tengku Zafrul’s departure from the MITI portfolio, which he had held since his appointment on 3 December 2022.

He previously served as Minister of Finance from 9 March 2020 to 9 November 2022, operating under three different Prime Ministers, including Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the appointment was approved by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“In addition to leading MIDA, Tengku Zafrul will be entrusted with several additional responsibilities, which are currently being finalised and will be announced by the Prime Minister in due course,” the statement said.

Tengku Zafrul’s new role positions him at the forefront of Malaysia’s investment and economic development strategy, leveraging his extensive experience in finance and government administration.

His appointment signals continuity in the nation’s efforts to attract and manage domestic and foreign investment while maintaining strategic oversight of industrial and trade policies.

This transition also reflects the Prime Minister’s approach to utilising experienced leaders in key statutory bodies following Cabinet reshuffles, ensuring that institutional expertise is retained within Malaysia’s economic and development framework. - December 3, 2025
