A MAN has been remanded for four days until Sunday after he allegedly forced his 19-year-old girlfriend to take pills intended to terminate her pregnancy, leading to the death of their premature baby.
Gombak District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir, said the 21-year-old suspect was arrested yesterday following a report lodged by Hospital Sungai Buloh (HSB) at 2.58pm the previous day.
He said the young woman delivered the baby at eight months of pregnancy at a private clinic in Rawang at 7.10am on Tuesday, before being referred to HSB for further treatment.
“Investigations found that the suspect had forced his girlfriend to consume a type of medication believed to be capable of inducing miscarriage.
“However, she delivered a premature baby, who was confirmed dead at 12.30pm on Wednesday due to complications and lack of oxygen,” he said in a statement.
Noor Ariffin said a case has been opened under Section 315 of the Penal Code, which concerns acts done with intent to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause its death after birth. Upon conviction, the offence carries a prison term of up to 10 years, a fine, or both.
He added that the woman will also be investigated as a suspect in the case.
