SPECULATION over the position of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, including allegations that he could be dismissed, was not discussed at a closed-door party meeting held tonight, according to several senior party leaders.
Those leaders, who spoke to reporters after the meeting, said the issue had not been tabled at all and dismissed the claims as an agenda driven by certain quarters.
The clarification follows an earlier newspaper report suggesting rumours were circulating that Hamzah could be removed from his post as Bersatu’s deputy president.
Separately, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the party’s Supreme Leadership Council (Majlis Pimpinan Tertinggi, MPT) respected the decision of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down as chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“MPT will defend the decision that has been made on the basis of principle and responsibility,” he said in a statement.
Azmin added that the council had also held in-depth discussions on the future direction of PN as it prepares for the 16th general election, with an emphasis on moving forward with policies that are moderate, progressive and people-centric.
“MPT has taken the position that Bersatu will remain a principled, consistent and loyal partner within PN,” he said.
“This cooperation will continue to be preserved for the sake of stability and the strength of the coalition,” he added.
He also said the council welcomed the president’s advice for Bersatu members to remain steadfast, disciplined and committed to a culture of mutual respect.
“In addition, members should be wise in resolving any differences in a prudent, mature and discreet manner for the sake of the party’s interests,” he said. - January 13, 2026
