THE recent unrest in the southernmost Thai provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, which border Malaysia, has resulted in almost a 50 per cent drop in the number of visitors crossing the border in Padang Besar, Perlis.
Thai-ASEAN Tourism and Halal Trade Association president Aida Qujeh said the violence in southern Thailand, as expected, has impacted the macro economy of the provinces bordering parts of Malaysia, especially at Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Kelantan.
The drop was based on a survey commissioned by the association at the Padang Besar crossing over the past five days.
There are several land crossings between both neighbours to meet the demand in trade, culture and tourism exchanges.
"We also noticed a drop in tourist activities in Krabi, Satun and Hat Yai, but there are still some bookings recorded as people have become accustomed to the spate of violence in southern Thailand," said Aida.
She said that fortunately for now, no tourist areas were targeted.
It is mostly confined to government symbols and landmarks such as quarters and areas fronting the police and army reserve barracks.
In the incident last week, up to 73 locations throughout the provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, the mostly farming and cottage industries' provinces down south, were rocked by arson, bombings and gunfire.
Aida said that the community in southern Thailand has a fervent hope that peace can be restored to the region in view that the conflict has continued for decades.
Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat are the worst hit, whereas the provinces fronting Perlis and Kedah - Satun and Songkhla, are largely spared, said Aida. - August 27, 2026.
