A 38-YEAR-old man suffered losses of RM12.47 million after cryptocurrency assets were transferred out of his digital wallet without his knowledge or consent.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stated that the victim discovered the loss at 1 pm yesterday while in Teluk Intan.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the transaction involved the transfer of cryptocurrency assets via the blockchain network.

"The police are conducting further investigations to identify the parties involved and trace the transaction, with assistance from the Cryptocurrency Unit of the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID)," he said in a statement today.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for one to ten years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.

Mohd Alwi advised the public, particularly cryptocurrency and digital wallet users, to remain vigilant against phishing attempts and online scams.

He also reminded users not to click on suspicious links or disclose their recovery phrases, private keys, or passwords to any party.

“Users are also advised to regularly check transaction records and linked applications, as well as to separate their savings wallets from those used for daily transactions.

“Individuals who suspect their accounts have been compromised should stop using the affected device, preserve digital evidence, contact the platform provider through official channels, and lodge a police report,” he said.

He also urged the public to strengthen their digital security measures to avoid falling victim to cybercrime. – October 10, 2026
