Batu Pahat tops national index at 189 as Johor bears the brunt of worsening air quality - October 10, 2026

HAZE has pushed air pollution to unhealthy levels in 33 areas nationwide, with Batu Pahat recording Malaysia’s highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 189 as at 6am today, according to the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS).

Johor was the worst-affected state, with eight locations registering unhealthy readings, led by Batu Pahat, followed by Pasir Gudang and Tangkak at 186 each, Larkin at 185, Segamat at 183, Kluang at 177, Kota Tinggi at 174 and Pengerang at 169.

The Klang Valley and neighbouring areas also continued to experience unhealthy air quality, with readings of 175 in Cheras, 171 each in Batu Muda and Johan Setia, 170 in Shah Alam and 169 in Putrajaya.

Petaling Jaya and Klang recorded readings of 162 each, followed by Banting at 159 and Kuala Selangor at 154.

In Negeri Sembilan, Seremban recorded an API of 186, while Nilai registered 180 and Port Dickson 166.

Melaka was also affected, with readings of 178 in Bukit Rambai, 175 in Bandaraya Melaka and 174 in Alor Gajah.

In Perak, Tasek Ipoh recorded 176, Pegoh Ipoh 172, Tanjung Malim 169 and Seri Manjung 156.

Rompin in Pahang registered 167, while Temerloh and Indera Mahkota in Kuantan each recorded 152.

Outside the peninsula, Kuching recorded an unhealthy reading of 151, while Seberang Perai in Penang registered 137 and Sungai Petani in Kedah 119.

Another 35 monitoring stations recorded moderate air quality, with readings ranging from 54 to 99. No location recorded very unhealthy or hazardous air quality as at 6am.

Under APIMS classifications, readings between 101 and 200 are considered unhealthy, while those between 51 and 100 are moderate.

Children, older people and those with respiratory conditions have been advised to reduce outdoor activities and wear face masks if they need to venture into haze-affected areas. - October 10, 2026
