THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating complaints over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media to create and distribute sexual images and videos purportedly involving pupils and teachers at a school in Kedah.
MCMC said the misuse of AI to create or distribute sexual content that could compromise the safety, dignity and well-being of victims, particularly children, could be subject to action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
In a statement of Thursday, It said licensed service providers also have child-protection obligations under Section 18 of the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA).
Those convicted could face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both, while offences committed against children could carry a prison sentence of up to five years, subject to the applicable laws.
MCMC said the case involved several agencies, including the Communications Ministry, Home Ministry, Education Ministry and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), each with their respective jurisdictions.
“MCMC will cooperate with the relevant parties in this investigation,” it said.
The commission also urged the public not to create, upload or redistribute sexual content involving or purportedly involving children, warning that such actions could further harm victims and interfere with the investigation.
Members of the public with relevant information have been urged to channel it to the authorities through the appropriate channels. - October 8, 2026
