HIS Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has called for schools in haze-affected areas to be closed, saying the health and safety of pupils and students must be given priority as air pollution levels remain elevated.
The King expressed concern over prolonged Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of between 150 and 180 and urged the Education Ministry to give serious attention to the situation.
“Appropriate measures must be taken by the ministry and relevant agencies to protect pupils and students, including senior citizens and respiratory patients.
“Always take precautions to safeguard health, including wearing face masks and reducing outdoor activities following the haze,” His Majesty said in a statement issued to the Royal Press Office (RPO).
Sultan Ibrahim’s call comes as haze continues to affect several parts of the country, with air quality deteriorating in a number of areas.
He also stressed that the health and safety of schoolchildren should remain a priority amid the prevailing conditions.
Yesterday, Johor announced the closure of schools for two days following a directive from the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, amid worsening haze and deteriorating air quality across the state. - October 8, 2026
