THE future leader of Sarawak who will succeed Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg must possess not only a strong and principled personality but also high integrity and sincere commitment to public service, the Premier said.
He stressed that the selection of the state’s highest office is a matter for the people rather than determined solely by political parties or individual influence.
“People must recognise the potential in someone to hold this position because it is a tremendous responsibility. Whatever we do today will be accounted for in the future,” Abang Johari told attendees at the ‘Townhall Premier Sembilan Tahun Bersama YAB Premier Sarawak’ on Monday evening.
He added, “This is my view… I provide free education because in Islam, when we pass away, only our deeds will aid us in the hereafter. If not for you, the people, how could I have become Premier?”
His remarks were in response to a question from a member of the audience regarding potential successors for the Sarawak Premiership.
Having been involved in politics for over four decades, Abang Johari highlighted that integrity is the most critical quality in leadership, warning that any missteps or abuse of power could have profound consequences for the state’s future.
“Sarawak needs a leader who understands the realities of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, and who can maintain harmony and peace while guiding the state’s development,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders properly, rather than rushing them into office.
“Leaders must be trained. I am grateful to have been mentored by leaders before me, including Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub and Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“The time will come when I will say ‘bye-bye’… it is up to the next generation to build Sarawak in a new way,” he added.
