MALAYSIA’S rich cultural and ethnic diversity is a shared national strength that is embraced and celebrated in the spirit of unity, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said, as he highlighted the significance of Thaiponggal in reinforcing harmony in the country’s multi-ethnic society.
In conjunction with the harvest festival, Aaron said the wide range of harvest celebrations observed by Malaysia’s diverse communities reflects the country’s unique character as a harmonious plural nation.
“Thaiponggal is a thanksgiving celebration marking the harvest season that symbolises appreciation for nature, agricultural produce and the tireless efforts of farmers.
“The word Ponggal means ‘to overflow’, symbolising shared prosperity, sustenance and well-being,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Aaron added that the arrival of the Thai month, celebrated by Hindus as a new beginning, provides an opportunity to strengthen mutual respect and the spirit of togetherness among Malaysians.
He extended his Thaiponggal greetings to the Indian community nationwide and expressed hope that the festival would continue to serve as a catalyst for national unity.
