Cause of blaze under investigation - January 18, 2026

TWO people were found burnt to death in a fire that destroyed workers’ living quarters in Miri, Sarawak, in the early hours of today, the Fire and Rescue Department confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said the victims, whose identities have yet to be established, were confirmed to be a man and a woman.

The department received an emergency call reporting the fire at 5.59 am, after which a team of firefighters from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found that a single-storey, semi-detached wooden workers’ quarters with two units had been completely destroyed, and two victims were discovered burnt at the scene,” the spokesperson said.

Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the cause of the fire and to positively identify the victims. - January 18, 2026
