THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from the Editor-in-Chief and the Online Editor of China Press as part of an investigation into an online publication suspected of breaching Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
In a statement dated Jan 22, 2026, MCMC said the investigation was initiated following reports concerning content published on the official China Press account on online media platforms.
The material was alleged to have contained false or misleading information related to the Royal Address delivered by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, during the opening of Parliament, particularly on matters concerning the status of Bahasa Melayu as the national language.
According to the commission, preliminary findings indicated that the content conveyed a meaning that differed from the actual Royal Address, potentially creating public confusion and giving rise to inaccurate perceptions of the Royal Institution and issues of national importance.
As part of the investigation, several devices and related materials were seized to facilitate further inquiries.
MCMC said it takes seriously any publication involving the Royal Address of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as well as matters concerning Bahasa Melayu as the national language. It reminded all media organisations of the need to conduct thorough fact-checking and to adhere strictly to the principles of responsible journalism.
The recording of statements from the China Press Editor-in-Chief and Online Editor was carried out at MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya, the commission said. - January 22, 2026
