PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on all segments of society to play an active role in elevating Malaysia’s stature as a tourism destination, stressing that the responsibility cannot rest solely with the government but must be shared by the public sector, private companies and ordinary citizens.
Speaking at the launch of Cerita Malaysia Kita in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) at Surf Beach, Sunway Lagoon, Anwar said tourism is a core national endeavour that requires broad-based participation and a positive national attitude.
“That is why we must ensure that all aspects of our activities, with tourism as one of its cores, require participation from everyone. Our attitude, our smiles, our work, our willingness to shape new ways of attraction,” he said.
“The government sector, the public sector, the private sector, tourism bodies, companies — all of these must play their role by looking positively at how we can undertake additional efforts to elevate the dignity of our country,” he added.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said Malaysia possesses significant potential, supported by encouraging economic growth indicators and positive public reception. However, he cautioned that progress comes with challenges that must be addressed collectively.
“A country can advance and stand out as a great nation, but it can also stagnate or decline. The people have chosen to achieve progress that is proud and successful,” he said.
He emphasised that national success depends on teamwork, mutual support and a conscious effort to reduce conflict and sentiments of hatred rooted in race or religion.
“This is not about winning or losing. This effort requires the participation of all parties and a commitment to ensure that every man, woman and child succeeds in this country, while receiving the support and encouragement they need,” he said.
At the event, organised jointly by Sunway Theme Parks and Westar Group, the Prime Minister also launched two key initiatives.
The first is a special Sunway Tiny Toys collection highlighting everyday Malaysian icons as heritage-inspired souvenirs.
The second is the Malaysia Attraction Passport, a programme designed to encourage domestic tourism through interactive experiences across four major family-friendly attractions.
Also in attendance were Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Steven Sim.
In addition, a special session was held at the Bernama Mobile Studio featuring an interview with Sunway Theme Parks chief executive officer Calvin Ho, who shared strategic perspectives on industry development, innovation, tourism and the country’s long-term direction. - January 31, 2026
