A SENIOR BERSATU leader has urged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin to resign as party President amid ongoing internal conflicts within BERSATU and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, suggesting that Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, the party’s Deputy President, should temporarily take over.

Yunus Nurdin, a member of BERSATU’s Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) and Chief of the Libaran division, said the call comes in light of the political uncertainty and confusion created by Muhyiddin’s unilateral actions and statements.

“The MPT BERSATU has repeatedly denied that any matters discussed between Muhyiddin and PAS leadership, including the proposal to abolish the PN Chairman position, were ever presented, debated, or agreed upon in any official MPT meetings,” he said.

Yunus added that such unilateral moves have caused political confusion, undermined trust within the party, and risked straining strategic relationships within the PN coalition.

“This has the potential to destabilise a coalition that should be built on consultation and collective decisions,” he explained.

He stressed that the current challenges within PN require leadership that is mature, credible, and capable of uniting all coalition components with principle and discipline.

Yunus highlighted Hamzah as the most suitable figure to assume the party presidency temporarily, citing his experience, authority, and political acumen.

“Hamzah is viewed as a leader with the expertise to shoulder BERSATU’s responsibilities, rebuild internal trust, and restore strategic relationships within PN in a structured, disciplined, and long-term stable manner,” he said.

Yunus further noted that Muhyiddin should focus on ongoing legal matters, including the Jana Wibawa case scheduled for hearing in March, to prevent party leadership and coalition management from being burdened by ongoing controversy.

“PN must be developed as a unified and stable political coalition that commands public confidence, especially ahead of the 16th General Election, rather than one continually plagued by leadership conflicts, contradictory statements, and internal distrust,” he said.

He emphasised that BERSATU and PN can remain a relevant alternative in national leadership only if coalition leadership is guided by integrity, clear direction, collective decision-making, and genuine unity, rather than perception politics or unilateral actions. - February 3, 2026
