A POWERFUL 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sabah in the early hours of Monday morning, sending tremors across parts of East Malaysia and Peninsular Malaysia but posing no tsunami threat, authorities said.

In a statement, MetMalaysia said the quake occurred at 12.57 am at coordinates 7.0 degrees North and 116.4 degrees East, at a depth of 678 kilometres beneath the seabed.

The epicentre was located approximately 49 kilometres west of Kudat, in waters off the state capital Kota Kinabalu.

Tremors were reported in several areas across Sabah, and were also felt in parts of Sarawak as well as in Peninsular Malaysia.

However, the meteorological department confirmed that there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the incident.

The agency said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. - February 23, 2026
