PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) convened its highly anticipated supreme council meeting at Gerakan headquarters on Saturday, March 14, bringing together senior leaders from across the coalition as the bloc moves to settle several critical leadership appointments, including the contentious position of Opposition Leader.
The meeting, scheduled at 11am, saw the arrival of top figures including PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
Also present were Kedah Mentri Besar and PN Chief Electoral Director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Bersatu vice-president Datuk Mohd Radzi Jidin, and PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad.
Speaking briefly to reporters, Ahmad Samsuri suggested that the council would address key appointments, including the Opposition Leader’s post.
“As usual, appointments will be made. (This includes the Opposition Leader?) Wait for the announcement,” he said, offering little further detail.
The position of Opposition Leader has become a focal point following the expulsion of Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin from Bersatu on February 13.
Hamzah, a former Bersatu deputy president, continues to hold the position, but the matter has been a source of tension within PN.
On February 22, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan indicated that PN component parties had proposed that PAS assume the Opposition Leader role, citing the party’s status as the coalition member with the largest number of parliamentary seats.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang recently confirmed the party’s readiness to accept the responsibility of Opposition Leader if mandated by opposition MPs.
Beyond the Opposition Leader role, the council is also expected to make key appointments such as the PN secretary-general and other senior positions within the coalition.
The council now operates with a restructured line-up following earlier changes within PN, and the decisions made at this meeting are expected to set the direction of the opposition coalition in Malaysia’s parliament. - March 14, 2026
