PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) is moving closer to naming a new Opposition Leader in the Dewan Rakyat, with its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan indicating he would accept the role if formally entrusted, even as the coalition continues internal deliberations.
Takiyuddin stressed that any appointment would depend on party consensus rather than personal ambition.
"We in PAS rely on the trust that is given. As long as that trust is not given, we cannot say whether we accept or decline. It does not arise yet, it is not relevant. If there is an instruction, we accept. If there is no instruction, then no," he told reporters on Tuesday.
His remarks come amid speculation that he is among the leading contenders to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, with PN having already decided that the position will be filled by a PAS Member of Parliament.
Takiyuddin emphasised that, regardless of the individual chosen, the candidate would come from PAS, reflecting the coalition’s internal arrangement.
He added that the final decision is expected to be announced by the end of the month or early next month, in line with earlier statements by PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
He acknowledged that Ahmad Samsuri, widely known as Dr Sam, is among those considered suitable for the role. "Yes, Dr Sam is one of those who may be qualified to become Opposition Leader because he is a Menteri Besar and also the chairman of PN. Previously, the secretary-general of PN held the position, so the chairman is even more qualified," he said.
Despite the speculation, Takiyuddin made clear that no definitive shortlist has been finalised within PAS.
"The actual names have not arisen. PAS itself has not made a final decision because everyone is qualified," he said.
He noted that several factors would be taken into account, including Ahmad Samsuri’s current responsibilities as Menteri Besar of Terengganu, should he be selected for the parliamentary role.
"We will consider various factors before making a choice. We must also look at his position as Menteri Besar and whether it is suitable. However, based on past experience in 1999, the Terengganu Menteri Besar at the time, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, also held the position of Opposition Leader.
“So, there is no issue. We will assess the current situation and choose the best among us. We work collectively, not as individuals," he said.
The anticipated leadership change follows PN’s internal decision to designate a PAS lawmaker as the next Opposition Leader, signalling a shift in the coalition’s parliamentary strategy as it prepares to announce its final choice in the coming weeks. - March 17, 2026
