THE nation’s second-largest parliamentary party is marking its 60th anniversary at a pivotal moment, as internal debate intensifies over whether it should continue as part of the unity government or reposition itself as a more critical political force.
The Democratic Action Party (DAP) is commemorating the milestone with a special congress, with delegates expected to confront questions over the party’s long-term direction and identity in government.
Central to the discussions is whether DAP should remain aligned with the national unity government under the Malaysia MADANI framework or return to a more opposition-driven stance rooted in its founding ideals.
The anniversary also comes as the party’s last surviving founding member, Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, recently marked his 85th birthday, underscoring the historical weight of the moment.
There are growing calls within party ranks to refocus on its original struggle for a more equitable Malaysia, rather than becoming entangled in issues centred on race, religion and royalty.
Political observer John Chin said the party must also address internal strains that have surfaced in key states such as Penang, Selangor and Melaka, where it has faced increasing political pressure.
He noted that DAP now faces the constraints of governance, a stark contrast to its earlier role in opposition.
The party, he said, is being tested by the realities of holding power, including the need to compromise on contentious issues.
In a statement marking the anniversary, deputy secretary-general Steven Sim Chee Keong said the theme for this year’s celebration is “Malaysia for Malaysians” (Malaysia untuk Rakyat Malaysia), reflecting both its historical mission and future aspirations.
The party said the anniversary serves as an opportunity to reflect on its long struggle while reinvigorating a new generation of members.
"We need to build a future which is fairer, inclusive and prosperous."
DAP also acknowledged its current responsibilities as part of both federal and state administrations, noting that its role now extends beyond advocacy to governance.
The anniversary takes place against a complex global backdrop, including ongoing geopolitical tensions such as conflict involving Iran and other regions, adding further challenges to the governing landscape.
Party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has articulated a vision for DAP to evolve into a party of “nation builders,” guided by Malaysian values and a renewed commitment to its founding principles.
The theme of the anniversary, the party said, is intended to serve as a moral compass in navigating its role in nation building while remaining anchored to its core ideals.
A series of events has been planned to commemorate the milestone, including a community run, the launch of a DAP60 logo and a major rally in Kuala Lumpur scheduled for September 20. - March 19, 2026
