BUKIT MERTAJAM – The wife of a Penang cafe owner is believed responsible for the communist-themed decorations at its two outlets.

Police believe that the woman, who is a Chinese national, was the one who put up décor resembling the late communist leader Mao Zedong.

The authorities will also investigate whether there is a hidden motive or political agenda behind the installation of such décor at the two outlets, located in Jalan Icon City, Bukit Tengah, near here, and on Pulau Tikus on the island.

Yesterday, cops removed the decor at the cafes.

Police have detained a 23-year-old manager to facilitate investigations.

The 41-year-old cafe owner, from Taman Bagan Lalang, Sg Lokan in Butterworth, has been placed under quarantine in George Town for suspected Covid-19.

Police will have to wait for his quarantine period to be over to record his statement.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Shafee Abd Samad said D7, D9 and Special Branch officers raided the double-storey Xiang Ge Li Li La Authentic Hunan Restaurant in Jalan Icon City about 12.40pm yesterday.

The officers removed a 764.5cm x 213cm wallpaper and other caricatures of the Communist Party army, and seized cups bearing images of Mao.

Shafee said there are CCTV cameras on the premises, but no security guards. – The Vibes, January 3, 2021
