MALAYSIA has reiterated its position that all international disputes must be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful engagement, as concerns continue to mount over instability in West Asia involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed the stance during a telephone conversation with Shehbaz Sharif, in which both leaders discussed regional developments, ongoing diplomatic efforts and the strengthening of bilateral ties between Malaysia and Pakistan.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Anwar said the conversation focused on recent progress in negotiations involving Iran and the United States, including discussions surrounding the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global trade and energy route disrupted by regional conflict.
“During a telephone conversation with my counterpart from Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, we discussed various regional developments and efforts to strengthen the long-standing close bilateral ties between Malaysia and Pakistan,” he said.
“I also conveyed Aidiladha greetings to him and the people of Pakistan, with the hope that the spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood will continue to strengthen peace and the wellbeing of the ummah.”
Anwar said Malaysia welcomed what he described as encouraging developments in negotiations between Tehran and Washington, particularly efforts aimed at restoring stability to maritime trade routes critical to global commerce and regional security.
“We touched on the positive developments in negotiations between Iran and the US, including discussions related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is extremely important for trade stability and regional security,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continuing diplomatic engagement and mediation role in efforts to reduce tensions in the region.
“I expressed Malaysia’s appreciation for Pakistan’s role in ongoing mediation efforts as well as its readiness to host the next round of negotiations,” Anwar added.
Beyond the Iran-US issue, the two leaders also discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon, with Anwar stressing the need for stronger international action against violence targeting civilians.
“We also discussed the importance of the international community speaking out and taking firm action to stop Israel’s violence and atrocities against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon,” he said.
Anwar said Malaysia hoped to further deepen relations with Pakistan not only for mutual national interests but also in support of wider international peace and stability.
“God willing, Malaysia-Pakistan relations will continue to be strengthened based on the spirit of friendship, mutual respect and a shared commitment towards global peace and prosperity,” he said. - May 28, 2026
