UMNO assembly to focus on renewal, relevance and national unity as 80th anniversary approaches

UMNO will begin its annual conference today, bringing together delegates from its divisions, Women’s Wing, Youth Wing and Puteri Wing nationwide for a series of meetings that will run until 12 July, with party leaders expected to focus on renewal, unity and future challenges confronting both the party and the nation.

UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the gathering would serve as an important platform to reinforce the party’s struggle, strengthen internal cohesion and renew its commitment to serving the people and safeguarding national interests.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development said this year’s conference takes place against an increasingly complex global backdrop characterised by economic uncertainty, rapid technological transformation and evolving social challenges, requiring UMNO to adopt a more forward-looking approach and formulate practical solutions for Malaysians.

“At the age of 80, UMNO cannot rely solely on the history of its struggle. The future requires the courage to change, the wisdom to adapt and the determination to remain relevant in meeting the expectations of the people.

“Therefore, I hope this year’s conference will become a platform for strengthening the Rumah Bangsa agenda and advancing National Deliberation efforts to unite thinking, reinforce national institutions and build broader cooperation for the benefit of Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post.

Zahid’s remarks reflect growing recognition within the party that its long-term political relevance will depend not only on its historical legacy but also on its ability to respond to contemporary concerns affecting voters across different generations.

He called on delegates to approach the conference with maturity and wisdom, encouraging open discussion while ensuring that the interests of the party, the nation and the public remain paramount throughout the proceedings.

The annual gathering is expected to provide an opportunity for UMNO leaders and grassroots representatives to assess the party’s direction, evaluate current political developments and consolidate support ahead of future electoral challenges.

Expressing confidence in the party’s continued role in national affairs, Zahid said UMNO must remain focused on strengthening its position as a trusted political institution capable of contributing to Malaysia’s stability and development.
