MALAYSIA is strengthening its position as a critical hub in the global semiconductor ecosystem, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirming the government's commitment to attracting and supporting high-quality investments that generate skilled employment and advance the country's technological capabilities.

The pledge followed a meeting between Anwar and AT&S Chief Executive Officer Dr Michael Mertin, during which both sides reviewed the latest developments surrounding the Austrian technology group's operations in Kulim, Kedah, one of Malaysia's most significant semiconductor manufacturing centres.

The discussion highlighted Malaysia's increasing significance within the global supply chain for advanced electronics, with AT&S designating the country as one of its key production bases, alongside Austria, China, and India.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the company currently employs approximately 2,700 workers at its Kulim operations, reflecting the scale of its investment and long-term commitment to Malaysia.

"AT&S is a global leader in high-value Integrated Circuit (IC) substrates and printed circuit boards. It also develops advanced connectivity technologies supporting mobile devices, automotive, aerospace, medical, industrial, and high-performance computing for AI applications," he said.

The Prime Minister noted that the presence and continued expansion of global technology firms such as AT&S demonstrate confidence in Malaysia's competitiveness as nations increasingly compete to secure strategic investments linked to semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said the government would continue to provide a stable and supportive investment environment to ensure Malaysia remains an attractive destination for technology-driven industries.

"The government will continue to provide clear, consistent support for high-quality investments to strengthen Malaysia's position in the global semiconductor value chain and create more high-skilled jobs for Malaysians.

"The confidence shown by international investors like AT&S reflects our political stability, prudent economic management, and the clarity of the MADANI Government policies," Anwar said.

The remarks come as Malaysia seeks to capitalise on rising global demand for semiconductors and advanced electronic components, positioning itself as a key manufacturing and innovation centre amid ongoing shifts in international supply chains.

With multinational technology companies expanding operations across the region, the government views investments such as AT&S's Kulim facility as central to its ambitions of moving Malaysia further up the semiconductor value chain while creating higher-income employment opportunities for local talent. - June 5, 2026
