THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating content associated with The Coverage Media’s Facebook page following complaints lodged by members of the public.
In a statement on Friday, the regulator said preliminary assessment found several pieces of content believed to be in breach of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which governs improper use of network facilities and services.
The matter has been referred to Facebook for further action in accordance with the platform’s internal policies and Community Guidelines.
Following Facebook’s assessment and subsequent notification to MCMC, access to the page has been restricted for users in Malaysia.
MCMC said the investigation into the content remains ongoing, and further action will be considered based on the outcome of its inquiries.
“The Commission will continue its investigation into the content on The Coverage Media’s Facebook page, and any follow-up action will be taken based on the findings,” it said in substance through its statement.
The regulator also reminded social media users to engage responsibly on digital platforms and to comply with national laws as well as the terms of service of online platforms.
MCMC added that enforcement efforts are intended to ensure a safer and more responsible digital environment in Malaysia, particularly in relation to content that may potentially breach communications laws.
Earlier, MCMC came under increasing pressure to explain its decision to restrict access to The Coverage Media’s Facebook page, following public calls for clarity from Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
The issue has drawn heightened attention after Teo publicly urged the regulator to provide an immediate explanation, while stressing that she has consistently upheld MCMC’s independence in enforcement matters and refrained from intervening in its decisions.
“I have always maintained a policy of non-interference regarding MCMC’s independent enforcement operations.
“However, I strongly urge MCMC to provide an immediate explanation for the restriction placed on The Coverage Media’s Facebook page,” she said.
Her remarks have intensified scrutiny of the restriction, which The Coverage Media said took effect on June 3, marking what it described as an unprecedented move in more than 10 years of operation.
The development has sparked wider concerns about the grounds for the action and its implications for transparency and trust in the regulation of online media platforms. - June 5, 2026
