KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Covid-19 death toll has exceeded 500 with today’s seven new deaths.
The country also logged 1,741 fresh Covid-19 cases, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said the cumulative number of cases stands at 120,818 while the death toll has reached 501.
Dr Noor Hisham said of the new cases, eight are imported.
He added that 122 cases require intensive care while 63 need ventilators.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases out of all the states with 687 infections, of which 541 are from existing clusters and close-contact tracing.
The ministry has recorded five new clusters today, he said during a press conference.
Dr Noor Hisham said that 32 cases reported today are from clusters in lockups, immigration detention centres and prisons – Telok Mas cluster (10 cases), Jalan Harapan Prison (9), Tembok Choh (6), Tembok Gajah (3), Tembok (2), Tembok Mempaga (1) and GK Tawau (1).
The new deaths today involved three people in Sabah – a man and two women aged between 50 and 83.
Two died in Johor, a man and woman aged 67 and 60, respectively.
Selangor saw the death of one woman aged 68, while Pahang recorded the death of a 45-year-old man. All patients who died had prior health conditions, such as diabetes and high-blood pressure.

Sabah came in second with 303 cases followed by Johor (295), Kuala Lumpur (150), Negri Sembilan (56), and Penang (55).
Kelantan recorded 50 cases, followed by Kedah (45), Melaka (34), Perak (34), Pahang (12), Putrajaya (6), Terengganu (4).
Both Labuan and Perlis recorded one case each.
Dr Noor Hisham said there are five new clusters today.
The clusters that ended are at 306, including six today, which are the Batu Sembilan, Saguking, Monsoon, Buntar, Sky Coklat, and Gading clusters.
A total of 231 clusters were still active, of which 50 reported new cases with the highest being Jalan Duyong (95), Jalan Perindustrian (81) and Hentian (73).
Dr Noor Hisham said the new clusters consisted of Jalan Duyong in Klang Selangor, which recorded 110 cases since December 31, and the Pasar Jalan Sentosa cluster in Kuala Langat, Selangor with 61 cases.
The new clusters also included Jalan Nakhoda in Titiwangsa and Cheras, Kuala Lumpur with 14 cases, the Ibol Ehsan cluster in the Hulu Perak, Larut, Matang, and Selama districts in Perak and Gombak in Selangor with 22 cases, as well as the Telok Mas cluster in Central Melaka with 13 cases. – The Vibes, January 4, 2021
