MALAYSIA has called for continued constructive engagement with the United States on trade issues as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani held his first bilateral meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during his working visit to Washington D.C.
Johari said he highlighted Malaysia’s strategic position as a trusted trading partner and an important contributor to global supply chains, particularly in the high-technology manufacturing sector.
“During my working visit to Washington, D.C., I held my first bilateral meeting with H.E. Jamieson Greer, the United States Trade Representative.
“I highlighted Malaysia’s strategic role as a trusted trading partner and an important contributor to global supply chains, particularly in high-technology manufacturing,” he said in a post on Facebook.
The meeting also covered efforts to strengthen bilateral trade relations based on mutual interests, including developments involving US investigations under Sections 301 and 232, which could potentially affect Malaysian exports.
Johari said Malaysia hoped any trade measures introduced would take into account shared interests, economic complementarity and the need to preserve the stability and resilience of global supply chains.
“We also discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral trade based on mutual interests, including developments relating to investigations under Sections 301 and 232 that may have implications for Malaysian exports.
“I conveyed Malaysia’s hope that any trade measures would take into account our shared interests, complement our respective economies and preserve stable and resilient global supply chains,” he said.
Johari said Malaysia and the United States had agreed to continue addressing trade matters through constructive dialogue, close engagement and transparent exchanges of information.
