CITRAWARNA Malaysia made a vibrant comeback at Dataran Merdeka, transforming the heart of Kuala Lumpur into a colourful celebration of the nation’s diverse cultures, traditions and heritage while reinforcing its role as a platform for unity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the revival of the event reflected the government’s commitment to preserving Malaysia’s cultural heritage, which he described as a fundamental pillar of the country’s identity.
He said Citrawarna, which returned after a seven-year hiatus, successfully brought together Malaysians from various backgrounds to appreciate the richness of the nation’s traditions.
“More encouraging is that this event, which is rooted in our history and identity, has succeeded in bringing Malaysians of all races together to enjoy the beauty of Malaysian culture.
“It has also nurtured a sense of mutual appreciation and strengthened the spirit of unity,” he said in a Facebook post.
Anwar said the return of Citrawarna was also part of efforts to showcase Malaysia’s uniqueness to the international community in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.
He expressed his delight at witnessing performances representing every state, highlighting the depth and diversity of the country’s traditional arts.
Among the featured performances were randai and tari piring, zapin and samrah, dondang sayang, as well as canggung dance.
“Each performance was not only entertaining but also highlighted the history and stories behind traditional arts passed down from generation to generation,” he said.
Held under the theme “Ritma Warisan, Nadi Nusa dan Bangsa” (Heritage Rhythms, The Soul of Nation and People), Citrawarna 2026 positioned Kuala Lumpur as a stage for celebrating Malaysia’s multicultural identity.
The highlight of the three-day celebration was the Citra Perarakan (Colours of Parade), which featured 3,500 dancers representing 13 states and three Federal Territories, alongside participants from various communities nationwide.
The programme, organised as one of Tourism Malaysia’s flagship events under the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, also featured three other key segments — Citra Rasa (Colours of Flavour), Citra Budaya (Colours of Culture) and Citra Seni (Colours of Art).
Visitors were treated to traditional performances, local cuisine, art exhibitions and interactive cultural activities designed to provide a wider appreciation of Malaysia’s heritage.
The event was attended by thousands of local and international visitors and was graced by Anwar and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Citrawarna 2026 also attracted more than 700 international tourists through specially curated travel packages involving visitors from China, India, Mauritius, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France.
Beyond cultural preservation, the event is expected to contribute to tourism growth and the local economy by increasing visitor arrivals and creating opportunities for hotels, tourism operators and local businesses.
Since its introduction in 1999, Citrawarna, also known as Colours of Malaysia, has served as an important platform to promote the country’s arts, culture, heritage and natural attractions to audiences worldwide. - July 26, 2026
