FORMULA 1 will return to Malaysia in 2026, with the Sepang International Circuit set to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4, following confirmation from the FIA and Formula 1.
The race will be held between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix as part of an agreement between Formula 1, the FIA, the Governments of Bahrain and Malaysia, to ensure the Bahrain Grand Prix remains on the championship calendar.
According to formula1.com, the event is subject to final agreements and official approval, including sign-off from the World Motor Sport Council.
The return of Formula 1 to Sepang represents a significant milestone for Malaysian motorsport, with the circuit welcoming the championship back after its last appearance in 2017.
Since making its Formula 1 debut in 1999, Sepang has earned a reputation as one of the sport's most challenging circuits, famed for its demanding corners, passionate supporters and unpredictable tropical weather.
Details regarding ticket sales for the 2026 race will be announced at a later date.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that the return of Formula 1 to Sepang reflected the success of collaboration between the sport's stakeholders and the governments involved.
"I am incredibly proud of the collaboration that will enable Malaysia to host the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at the iconic Sepang circuit later this year," he said.
He said the FIA, Formula One Management and Bahrain's partners had worked extensively to identify solutions while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved remained the top priority.
"Throughout this process, the FIA, Formula One Management, and our partners in Bahrain have worked tirelessly to explore every option, with the safety and well-being of the teams, volunteers, officials, our colleagues, and fans remaining our highest priority," Ben Sulayem said.
He added that Malaysia's return to the Formula 1 calendar demonstrated the country's enduring connection with the championship and the importance of international cooperation in motorsport.
"Malaysia has long held an important place in the history of Formula 1, and the return of the Championship to Sepang is testament to our close relationship with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia, the continued commitment of the Malaysian Government, and the strength of international cooperation within our sport," he said.
Formula 1 President and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali said the agreement showed the sport's ability to adapt while continuing to deliver a complete and exciting calendar for fans.
"We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1," he said.
Domenicali thanked Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim and both governments for their support in making the arrangement possible.
"Most importantly, this is fantastic news for our fans. They will continue to enjoy a full and exciting Formula 1 calendar, while also seeing the sport return to a great venue. Malaysia is an incredible country, and Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history," he said.
Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said the hosting arrangement reflected the strong relationship between Bahrain and Malaysia while reaffirming Bahrain's commitment to Formula 1.
"With the blessings of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar, King of Malaysia, and building on the close and brotherly relations between our two countries, I am proud to join Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in announcing that Bahrain will host the Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, from 2 to 4 October 2026," he said.
He said the event would offer fans worldwide a memorable racing experience while demonstrating Bahrain's continued support for the championship.
"I offer my sincere appreciation to F1, the FIA, Bahrain International Circuit, Sepang International Circuit, and the teams for their support in helping us deliver an exciting weekend of racing," he said.
Anwar had said Malaysia was honoured to support Bahrain, Formula 1 and the FIA in bringing the event to Sepang.
"We are honoured to support the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula 1 and the FIA in hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit this year," he said.
Anwar said the collaboration represented more than the staging of a global sporting event, describing it as a reflection of the strong ties between Malaysia and Bahrain.
"This collaboration is more than the staging of a world-class sporting event. It reflects the enduring friendship, mutual trust and close partnership between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, while reaffirming Malaysia’s readiness and capability to host major international events," he said.
He added that Malaysia was prepared to welcome Formula 1 teams, officials and fans from around the world while showcasing its infrastructure, operational capabilities and hospitality.
"We look forward to showcasing our world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and warm hospitality, while further strengthening the bonds between our two nations through this special occasion," he said.
The last Formula 1 race at Sepang was held in 2017, when Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen won the Malaysian Grand Prix. The 2026 event will mark the championship's return to the circuit after a nine-year absence. - July 27, 2026
