Tok Mat calls for return to 'Malay leadership' model to safeguard stability, economic growth

BARISAN Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (or Tok Mat) has called for the restoration of what he described as the traditional concept of Malay leadership, saying it is vital to maintaining national stability and ensuring continued economic development.

Mohamad, who is defending the Rantau state seat in Saturday's Negeri Sembilan state election, said the concept had long underpinned the country's political framework and should be reinstated, as Malays form the majority of the population.

“This state has a Malay majority. It has long been the norm for the concept of Malay leadership to serve as the foundation of our country.

“The concept is reflected in the Federal Constitution, and we were entrusted with that responsibility since Independence. However, it changed in 2018 when UMNO, as the core party in Barisan Nasional, lost power and no longer administered the state.

“I hope we can return to that concept of Malay leadership. Malays have long been accustomed to assuming that role. Malays are magnanimous,” he said after attending a community gathering with residents of Kampung Bemban on Friday night.

The Foreign Minister said the majority community should assume the leading role in protecting all races and ensuring the country's stability.

“This is a concept that has proven effective in a multiracial country such as ours. A minority cannot be the leading force.

“It must be the majority that takes the lead so that we can protect everyone together. Everyone should be able to find shelter under our wing.

“This is what we need to restore so that the country can continue to develop. Stability is what matters most, especially at a time of political uncertainty and economic challenges. We need stability,” he said.

The former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar who served the state from 2004 to 2018, said political stability was crucial to attracting investment, creating employment opportunities and strengthening the state's economy.

“What matters is that the people of Negeri Sembilan enjoy prosperity. With stability, we can attract more investors, create more jobs for our young people and strengthen purchasing power.

“That is how we can achieve balanced development without harming society,” he said. - July 31, 2026
