Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah calls for greater awareness, tolerance and compassion towards mental health struggles - August 1, 2026

SOCIAL stigma surrounding mental health issues has caused many individuals struggling with emotional and psychological challenges to suffer in silence rather than seek professional assistance, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, has said.

Her Majesty said negative perceptions surrounding mental health remained a major barrier preventing people from accessing the support they need, stressing the importance of building a more understanding and compassionate society.

Raja Zarith Sofiah said studies highlighted that both adults and children continue to face growing mental health challenges.

“Adults face various challenges including financial instability, pressure caused by debt and complicated family relationships.

“In addition, 16.5 per cent of children aged between five and 15 years face mental health issues, while one in four adolescents aged between 13 and 17 years experience depression,” Her Majesty said.

The Queen called on society to develop greater tolerance and empathy towards those experiencing mental health difficulties, while improving public knowledge and awareness of the issue.

“When information and knowledge can be accessed at our fingertips, we seem to be becoming less tolerant, less compassionate and even more inclined to search for differences rather than the similarities that we actually share, regardless of our backgrounds, ethnicity, beliefs or roles in society and our respective countries,” Her Majesty said.

Raja Zarith Sofiah delivered the royal address at the 10th University of Reading Graduation Ceremony, where Her Majesty was conferred an honorary Doctorate in Psychology.

In Her Majesty’s address, the Queen also highlighted the important role of universities in shaping future generations, saying institutions of higher learning should not only produce graduates equipped with knowledge and skills but also help students develop character, wisdom and the ability to make decisions based on moral values.

Her Majesty stressed that education must extend beyond academic achievement by nurturing individuals who are capable of contributing positively to society with empathy, integrity and social responsibility. - August 1, 2026
