ALL Malaysia Airlines pilots will undergo mandatory drug screening following the arrest of a crew member in Indonesia over an alleged drug smuggling case.

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said the screening exercise began immediately and involves all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots, with the process expected to be completed by Aug 15.

The company said pilots who fail to complete the screening within the deadline will be barred from operating flights until they receive clearance under MAG’s internal procedures and aviation requirements.

The move follows the arrest of a 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines second officer in Jakarta on July 28 after Indonesian authorities allegedly found 26kg of MDMA in his luggage upon his arrival from Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities in Indonesia also said initial urine tests showed the pilot had tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine.

MAG said the pilot was not on duty during the incident and was travelling as an observer in the cockpit jump seat, rather than operating the aircraft.

The group said the alleged actions were unacceptable and did not reflect the professional standards expected of its employees.

The mandatory screening will be carried out alongside MAG’s existing random testing programme and will later be expanded to cover all active pilots and cabin crew within the group.

Apart from Malaysia Airlines, MAG also operates regional carrier Firefly and pilgrimage airline Amal.

The case has attracted attention due to Indonesia’s strict stance on drug offences, with the country imposing some of the world’s harshest penalties for serious narcotics crimes. – August 7, 2026
